Career
Over 15 years I've specialized in platform-level services at the boundary of mobile apps and distributed infrastructure: real-time event delivery, notification pipelines, and backend-for-frontend systems. At SimpliSafe I founded and led the App Services team from the ground up as a player-coach, then intentionally stepped back into a hands-on individual-contributor role to focus on what I love most: system design, architecture, and solving hard distributed-systems problems alongside a great team, but most importantly, solving real problems for real people. The services I've built and operate scaled with the company from ~1M customers to 5M+ people protected, moving tens of millions of real-time events and notifications a day.

I'm an agilist at heart: extreme programming, test-driven development, and rapid feedback through continuous delivery. I treat what I don't know as an opportunity to learn, I openly mentor and share what I've accrued, and I expect the same generosity back from the people I work with. Lately that curiosity has extended to agentic AI tooling and decentralized protocols.

↗A slightly more interesting day today: At work, we're doing an AWS workshop, Agentic Design Patterns with Claude. I've already been pretty deep with Claude for a while now, but hopefully learn something new. and then halfway through the day, off to a new endodontist! Not looking forward to that.

↗It’s very MVP, but it works by pulling Bluesky, sifa.id, standard.site, and other records out of my PDS and rendering them out into a personal site kind of experience. View on Bluesky ↗I’ve been letting the machine run on a few projects for a little while now, and I haven’t been as deep in the code. So I decided to tackle a new project, just doing some data analysis over the firehose and historical data, and learning Gleam and BEAM. First time, and seems neat so far!
↗Has anyone done “discord presence detection, but as a standalone atmosphere app” yet? Thinking of like a minimal desktop daemon that could run standalone or plugin to eg. a future Roomy desktop app, and publishes out records when you are currently playing something, accumulates your playtime, etc.

However I feel like I’m missing an opportunity to level up my own design skills. Any recommendations on where to start? I was thinking I’d boot up Figma and start moving boxes around.
